It’s also the coldest day in July for Mount Isa ever recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Bureau of Meteorology Mount Isa manager Les Lever said the maximum temperature in Mount Isa on Thursday was 10 degrees.
The lowest maximum temperature for Mount Isa on record was 10.6 degrees, Mr Lever said.
19.8 mm of rain fell in Mount Isa within 16 hours on Wednesday and Thursday.
The 19.8 millimetres collected from the rain gauge based near the Mount Isa airport was measured between 5pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday. Another 1.4 mm descended during the rest of that day.
The data is shown for every half hour. There was no rain in the gauge at 4.30pm Wednesday. There was 0.2mm half an hour later.
Rain was consistent throughout this period, although the heaviest downpour was 1.2 mm between 1.30am to 2am, Thursday.
Mr Lever said the average rainfall for Mount Isa in July was 5.6 mm.
“We’ve surpassed our average already. It happened in June as well,” Mr Lever said.
But it was not uncommon for the Mount Isa area to surpass the average rainfall in winter months, if it did receive any rain.
Mr Lever said the average monthly rainfall was so low in winter months that it only took decent rainfall from one storm to surpass it.
Therefore it was common for Mount Isa to overtake the average if it received rain.
Cloncurry received approximately 21.2 mm late Wednesday night and Thursday.
On Thursday the Curry’s lowest temperature was 9.6 degrees, but rose as high as 11.3.
Julia Creek received 8.8 mm of rain on Thursday. Its lowest temperature was 9.8.
