Angland, who turns 27 on Saturday, shares a birthday with his one-year-old daughter Addison and after winning the Grafton Guineas-Ramornie Handicap double on Wednesday he looks to have the rides to back it up at Rosehill.

"It was a bit of an early  birthday present when I saw the draws because I knew I had a good book of rides," Angland said. "We had a little party for Addison the other day and hopefully mine will come with a few winners on Saturday.

"I'm riding through [the winter] into the spring and a day like this could be a springboard when you are riding for good stables."

Angland will jump from gate one on El Sasso, Thud and Marenostro in the Winter Stakes and some of his other rides have two, three and four.

Marenostro is a horse Angland knows well having won on him  four times and believes from the rails draw he can return to  his best, after a couple of disappointing efforts at his past two appearances where there has been excuses.

"I have had to use him up early lately because of his draws. He has the soft gate on Saturday and hopefully we can get in behind and save energy so he can show his turn of foot," Angland said. "It has been taken away from him by doing a bit of work in his last couple [of starts] but he is up to this sort of race."

Angland rates El Sasso as his best ride of the afternoon but is also well aware of Thud, which has been controversially beaten at her two runs since a spell.

"She is one of those horses you need to get your timing right on and need the gaps to come at the right time," Angland said. "From the good gate I should get the right run and we all know she has a sharp sprint.

"She has shown that at her two runs but the breaks have come too late."

Punters will be hoping Angland can get it right with Thud a $3 chance and El Sasso a $2.70 favourite at Ladbrokes.

"El Sasso was very good first-up and looks well placed again from a good gate," he said. "When you have good chances and get good gates you go to the races with a bit of confidence."

Meanwhile Magic Millions and Golden Slipper winner Capitalist impressed in his first public appearance of his spring preparation winning a barrier trial at Randwick on Friday.

The Written Tycoon colt took a sit behind the leaders in a three-horse and dashed through on the fence at the 200m mark for a 1-1/4 length win.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden said the plan for Capitalist was another trial on July 29 before he resumes in the Missile Stakes against older horses at weight-for-age on August 6.

Capitalist has opened the $6 favourite for September's Golden Rose at the TAB.
