Hundreds of tartan kilts, banners and shawls of all colours were out in full force to celebrate Queensland's Scottish heritage.
While the weather was dreary, it didn't dampen the Scottish spirit as 50-odd stalls were set up in King George Square for Tartan Day, offering haggis rolls, Scottish wares and information tents on the many clans in Queensland.
Australian Scottish Community President Ian Campbell said Saturday marked the 20th year for the event that celebrated the tartan, which was banned in Scotland after the Battle of Culloden in 1745 that tried to break up the clan system.
"No Scot was allowed to wear a piece of tartan and if they were caught they were transported as slaves (to the colonies)," he said.
"They had to dress the same as the English, they weren't allowed to wear kilts."
However the spirit of the Scottish couldn't be crushed and the ban was eventually lifted in 1782.
Mr Campbell said there were now thousands of tartan variations and said Queensland had its own tartan.
"It is a blue tartan with the yellow colour of the sugarcane flowers and also a bit of white," he said.
"There are about 3000 tartans at the moment, every state has its own tartan."
Brisbane author and Buchanan clan member Carmel McMurdo Audsley said Tartan Day was a place for those with Scottish heritage to find out which clan they belong to.
"It might be five generations ago they had a Scottish ancestor, but people still come along," she said.
"Even if they don't know their history, they can come here and find out what clan you belong to and what tartan you are associated with."
Ms Audsley said there was a "huge" history of Scottish migration to Australia, which has seen many make their own tartans.
"You can get your own tartans commissioned these days as well, some of the clans might have an ancient tartan and a modern tartan," she said.
"People marry into different clans and they accept both tartans.
"The whole idea of the tartan was to identify clans when they use to fight each other, but you can now wear any tartan now.
People seem to like the tartan and plenty of people like to wear it."
