Competitors braved the wet and cold conditions at the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre at the event held Thursday to Sunday. The minimum temperature was 9.3 degrees on Friday and the town received 19.6 mm of rain in a 24 hour period beginning Thursday morning.
Campdraft coordinator Kim Robertson said the wet weather meant a shortage of cattle because many of the property owners to supply the cattle were rained in. There was 370 head of cattle at the event when 1500 was typically supplied.
The dry work also needed to be held in the Peter Abdy arena because the Merry Muster arena held too much water.
However, judges were still able to score some high scores among the competitors, she said.
Competitors travelled to Cloncurry from across the state from towns such as Kingaroy, Charters Towers and Mitchell, as well as from NSWs and the Northern Territory.
Competitor Rob Sharp travelled from Singleton, NSW, to compete in the challenge with horse Checkers.
“The arena is quite good, I’m getting into it,” Mr Sharp said. “It’s not slippery.”
It is the first time he had been to Cloncurry.
“I have always wanted to come up and have a look.
“I thought I might as well bring a horse.”
