The Blackhawks had a comfortable victory in Mount Isa in their Intrust Super cup game against the Central Queensland Capras with current North Queensland Cowboy Ray Thompson putting in a man of the match performance while there was an impressive cameo from former Cowboy great Matty Bowen.
Blackhawks coach Kristian Woolf was able to name a strong side for the ‘Get in the Game’ Country Week round in the north-west with influential five-eighth Jahrome Hughes returning from injury to have a solid game.
However the signs didn’t look good early on when the Capras grabbed the first four-pointer of the day scored by Junior Kirisome.
But his opposite number three Moses Pangai quickly restored parity before Corey Jensen angled over a superb conversion from the corner.
Townsville were ahead on 15 minutes and from there they never looked back.
Thompson was at the heart of every slick move as they sliced open the Capras defence at will.
Rhyse Martin grabbed the first of his hat-trick of tries on 19 minutes, Pangai grabbed another four minutes later and there was a huge cheer when Matty Bowen got on the end of a flowing move to add his name to the try-scorers on 28 minutes.
Conor Carey grabbed the next try but the cheer that greeted Bowen’s try was matched for the next try when former Normanton Stinger Davin Crampton crossed the line after another superb team effort.
Thompson was at heart of everything and deserved a try of his own on 38 minutes.
By now Bowen had taken over kicking duties and he kicked truly to make matters 38-4 at the break with seemingly no way back for the Capras.
The away team was more competitive in the second half but the Blackhawks continued to dominate the scoreboard.
Martin completed his hat-trick with tries on 46 and 49 minutes, the latter after superb hands by Thompson and Bowen.
Finally on 56 minutes the Capras were able to double their score but still a long way behind at 56-8.
But Carey soon grabbed his second try and Delouise Hoeter and Willie Minoga got in on the act too as the Capras wilted in the afternoon sun and the game became an exhibition of Blackhawks skills.
Capras got the final try of the game on the siren.
The final score: Townsville Blackhawks 74, Central Queensland Capras 12.
The result moves the Blackhawks back to third place.
