Leppitsch felt relieved for his players after they posted their second win for the season on Sunday, a 37 point win over Essendon that moved the Lions one game clear of last spot on the ladder.

He said he had not gone into the match wondering about what the consequences of a loss would mean for him, given the conversations he had been having behind closed doors.

"I think about what the 'externalists' say, but every conversation I've had internally is not like that. It's more about how we plan our pathway, how are we going to improve our development of our guys?" said Leppitsch.

"At our footy sub-committee (meeting) last week it was, how are we going to plan our future with getting improvement quicker, and better than most?

"They're all the conversations we have, we never sit around and talk about 'geez, is my particular position the one that's got to change?'

"I know externally, that's always been the messaging over time. That's what my job is, it's the one: forget all the facts and age groups and any other thing you're telling us, if you're losing, you go.

"That's what the public does, and it will probably be like that forever. That's why you need a really strong board and really strong footy club to ignore than and continue to focus."

Leppitsch said everything he had heard and been told within the club was that his plans for the team's development were supported at board level.

"Everything I've heard has only been in that direction. I can't guess any other way," he said.

"I only get told what i'm told - and I'm sure you've heard that a hundred times - but there is not an inkling in my mind of any other conversation we have about 'geez, what about your coaching?'

"It's all about how do we grow these boys better."

While Leppitsch is approaching the end of his third year in the job, he said the need in his first two seasons to undertake a significant turnover of the club's list meant he felt like he was still starting out.

Young talls Eric Hipwood, Josh Schache and Harris Andrews were all part of the team that kicked 20.8 to beat an inaccurate Essendon.

"All we've done over two years is strip back the list to a point (where) now we can build," he said.

"To be honest, I feel like a first-year coach, where the public see me as a third-year coach.

"That might be the difference in how we perceive each other and I feel the club sees me as a first-year coach more than a third year coach given all I've done for two years is strip the list back.

"There's not a lot of coaching in that, but now it's time to grab the boys and build on them and make them better."

Daniel Rich and Tom Rockliff were among Brisbane's better players against the Bombers, the Lions making a four-goal start to set up their win and dominating the clearances for most of the game.

"It was a long wait, and it's exciting, and it's just good relief for our young boys just to get that winning feeling," he said.

"I'm a pretty logical human being and most of the time I look into what we didn't do right and wrong, and the results are almost the last thing I look at at times.

"A lot of us are like that - but yeah, there is a sense of emotion attached to it for our football club and our players and our captain and our leaders who hold a lot of weight and care for our footy club.

"For that, there's a great sense of relief there."
