The Chaser and former Fairfax columnist Mike Carlton will headline Brisbane City Council's Writers in Residence program, to be held in the city's libraries next month.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the $100,000 program was designed to use big-name authors to encourage reading and writing in local communities.
"Since launching in 2012, the Writers in Residence program has proved highly popular with literary fans, as well as engaging audiences of all ages, with diverse reading and writing interests," he said.
"As well as providing emerging local writers with a chance to be inspired by experienced authors, the Writers in Residence program also showcases council's libraries as great venues for literary events.
"Brisbane is a vibrant and creative city with a great reputation for attracting artistic endeavours and I'm looking forward to welcoming more top authors to our libraries."
Cr Quirk said more than 25,000 people had attended libraries through the program over the past four years.
The 2016 Writers in Residence will include:
Mike Carlton at Carindale Library, on Monday August 1 at 6pm.
"Mike Carlton's research has captured a unique and fascinating part of Australia's history and covers the sinking of HMAS Australia I in 1924 all the way through to World War II and the battles and stories of HMAS Australia II," a council spokeswoman said.
"In a working life of more than 50 years, Mike became one of Australia's best-known media figures as a radio and television news and current affairs reporter, foreign correspondent, radio host and newspaper columnist."
Carlton had a regular Sydney Morning Herald column until a controversial parting of ways in 2014.
Liane Moriarty at Wynnum Library, on Tuesday August 2 at 6pm.
"Liane Moriarty has written six bestselling novels including The Husband's Secret and Big Little Lies," the council spokeswoman said.
"Her books have been read by more than 6 million people worldwide and her novel Big Little Lies is currently being adapted into a television series by HBO, starring Nicole Kidman and Reece Witherspoon."
The Chaser at Brisbane City Hall, on Tuesday August 9 at 6.30pm.
"The Chaser are a satirical comedy team best-known for their television programs including The Chaser's War on Everything," the council spokeswoman said.
Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton at Brisbane City Hall, on Sunday August 14 at 10am.
"Andy Griffiths is one of Australia's most popular children's authors and his books, which began with The Just! books, are as well-known for their stories as they are for Terry Denton's illustrations."
John Maclean at Carindale Library, Monday August 22 at 2pm.
"John Maclean is an inspiring athlete who was left a paraplegic after being struck down by a truck while training for a triathlon," the council spokeswoman said.
"He is one of the most accomplished wheelchair athletes in the world and the first paraplegic to swim the English Channel."
Cr Quirk launched the Writers in Residence program in 2012, in one of his first acts as lord mayor.
