Holden, who left Fairfax Media this year, was seen by CA to be "a respected community leader with developed relationships in government, both locally and internationally, and also holds a wide range or corporate relationships with leaders from a multitude of organisations".

He had been a journalist for more than 30 years, and had been in charge of newsrooms in New Zealand and in Melbourne for eight years. Holden replaces Jono Rose, who quit earlier this year.

Ben Amarfio, CA's executive general manager, media, communications and marketing, said the governing body was delighted to have had a candidate of Holden's experience.

"Andrew has a thorough understanding of new media, as it was his initial brief at The Age to integrate The Age's print and digital operations and transition it to a fully digital newsroom.  Andrew has worked in community and metro news and magazine operations in Australia, the UK and New Zealand," he said.

"We believe this expertise will further strengthen cricket's communications team and assist cricket in its vision of being Australia's favourite sport and a sport for all Australians."

Holden will begin in the his new role on August 8.
