It won the award for Best New Australian Work at Monday night's awards ceremony for its production of Ladies in Black.

The show, written by Carolyn Byrne with music by Tim Finn, was directed by Simon Phillips and starred a host of local favourites as well as cast members from interstate.

Ladies in Black was nominated for a swag of awards but only managed to take out one.

The other big Queensland winners were Brisbane Baroque and Circa.

Brisbane Baroque, which has been mired in recent months by claims of cast members not being paid, took awards in both performance categories and the highly respected Best Opera award for Agrippina.

Circa, the Brisbane-based physical theatre and circus company, was nominated in two categories this year and won them both.

The company's production for Brisbane Festival – Il Ritorno – won best physical theatre production while their collaboration with French Baroque earned the best chamber music award.

In total, Queensland performers and companies were nominated for a record 32 awards this year, taking home seven.

While Queensland certainly stole the spotlight at Australia's version of the Tony Awards this year, the true star was Matilda the Musical.

The musical based on Roald Dahl's book with music by Tim Minchin, was nominated for 13 awards – the most any production has ever been nominated for.

It won all of them, including Best Musical, wiping out any other production's chance to get their hands on a trophy.

The Helpmann Awards are Australia's night of nights for the live performance industry and included special performances from the casts of Singin' in the Rain, Ladies in Black and Matilda the Musical.
