Fixing a chain on a bicycle may have seemed a small gesture to Deacon Ashton, 14, of Cloncurry, but it saved Reggie Douglas, 8, a long walk home.

Deacon not only fixed the chain but taught Reggie how to do it next time. He and his sister Darcie-Lee Ashton, 16, were grocery shopping at the time. Darcie-Lee said she felt very proud of her brother.
“We were walking out (of the grocery store) and Reggie couldn’t fix his bike because the chain had come off. My brother handed me the shopping and went and fixed it for him. He’s turned into a gentleman. He is very special to me,” Darcie-Lee said.
Darcie-Lee said she and her brother had been raised by their grandmother Yvonne Lennon who taught them to abide by the words of Mary MacKillop and always do something to help anyone in need.
“This is how we have been raised and when you see your brother seeing someone with a need and doing something about it, you feel proud,” she said.
Darcie-Lee said she believed these sorts of actions were rarer in the city than in a country town.
