Sam Cooke is cycling unsupported for most of his 1800 kilometre journey to raise money for cancer research through the Mater Hospital Cancer Charity Foundation.
His mother Gloria died from metastatic bladder cancer recently.
Local Mount Isa cyclists and athletes have ensured that he will have good company for the last stretch of the journey.
They ride together from Cloncurry on Saturday and aim to complete their journey at about noon. It’s understood that Mr Cooke will stop by the Body Balance Gym for fitness challenges, having received a donation. Mr Cooke aims to raise $10,000 from the ride.
Mount Isa triathlete Amanda Gowing said that cyclists involved in the last stretch would enjoy lunch at the Outback at Isa cafe afterwards.
She described Mr Cooke’s accomplishment as a “mammoth effort”.
