The $5 million upgrade will raise the class of effluent water for use in the city's parks and ovals and the newly installed effluent tanks leaves only the ultraviolet sanitising unit to go.
During a visit to the sewage treatment plant to inspect the project’s progress with council officials, Assistant Minister for Local Government Jennifer Howard said the state government had invested more than $1 million to the project.
“Upgrading the 40-year-old sewage treatment plant will increase capacity in the sewerage network and improve reliability and performance of the entire system.” Ms Howard said.
“A stronger sewerage system lays the groundwork for future development and sustainability of the region.”
With the effluent tanks successfully installed, the ultraviolet sanitising unit is the final piece that will help produce Class A quality water to irrigate soccer fields and the horse paddocks, keep Mount Isa green and protect valuable drinking water in the region.
Ms Howard said people sometimes took services for granted but there was a cost and a lot of work that went on behind the scenes and she praised the work of what she called “a dynamic council”.
“I’m delighted to be here and see it first hand,” she said.
Mount Isa City Council was one of 49 local governments to receive a share of the $24,931,626 funding for 2015-16 from the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the project was vital in providing enhanced water infrastructure for Mount Isa.
“The Sewerage Augmentation Project will benefit this city enormously by improving the quality of effluent water which will be used for a number of Mount Isa’s parks and recreational grounds after the wastewater has been treated,” Mayor McCulloch said.
"This project will lessen the demand on Mount Isa’s potable water supplies and enhance the city’s green areas.”
Mount Isa’s Sewerage Augmentation Project Stage 2 is expected to be completed by the end of October 2016.
The tank at the treatment plant upgrade works stores A Class treated effluent water prior to it being distributed to city’s facilities, including the horse paddocks, sporting ovals, cemetery and the Sunset Dog Park.
