Cloncurry is hosting the Northern Queensland Local Government Association conference for councils above Latitude 21 and mayor Campbell said the region had three major mining projects about to kick off worth over a billion dollars.
“Last week Cudeco produced its first copper concentrate, MMG’s Dugald River is full steam ahead in construction and Altona Mine has secured its funding,” Cr Campbell said.
“On top of that we’ve got our major players Glencore’s Ernest Henry mine which has successfully transition from an open-cut to an underground mine, we’ve got Incitec Pivot’s world-class phosphate deposit and fertiliser plant.”
Cr Campbell said these mines employed 2000 people paying $250 million in wages and contributed over $150 million in royalties.
“Our challenge is to ensure the council and the community get an acceptable level of benefit from the projects,” he said.
