Normally just a dot on the landscape 60km north of Cloncurry, the tiny settlement of Quamby sprang into life on the weekend with the annual rodeo, a tradition that dates back to 1997.

When a group of committed locals gathered in the sadly now defunct Quamby pub in 1995 little did they realise they would start a 20-year-old tradition that sees upwards of two thousand people cram the rodeo grounds each year.
This year was no exception and a big crowd enjoyed the thrills and spills of a fabulous day’s competition.
Local girl Kate Cusack won the ladies barrel with Wendy Christie second and Rebecca Luxford third.
Junior barrel winner was Jose Christie, second Tessa Storman, third Chelsea Daniels.
Matthew Locke won the mini-barrel race, second Matt Scanlan, third Ben Abdy.
Team roping winner was Kenny Daniels and Kolt Ferguson, second Colin Ferguson and Kenny Daniels.
Breakaway roping winner was Kelly-Jo Litchfield, second Louise Wilde, third Raetta Harrison.
Calf roping winner was Colin Ferguson, second Scott Clinch, third was Kolt Ferguson.
The cow ride was won by Jim Hyde, second Kolt Ferguson, third Sam Turnbull.
Calf ride winner was Tuquri Orcher, second was Cade Ferguson, third Gesse Renfrey.
The $600 greasy pig under 13 was won by Reddie McMillan.
No one placed a score in the steer wrestling.
Best feature horse was ridden by Tristan Brandan.
The feature bull was unridden.
The juvenile barrel race first place went to Kelly-Jo Litchfield, second place Brandi Ferguson, third to Bridget Rutherford.
The bull ride was won by Lachie Scales, second Cody Tully, third Connor Klements.
The bronc ride was won by announcer for the day Luke Chaplain, second Dan Turnbull, third Kolt Ferguson.
Turnbull won the station buck jump from Chaplain with Phillip Manschon third.
Calf scruffing was won by Charlie Everitt and Ben Tully, second Tom McMillan and Drew Hacon, third Cam Pady and Dan Turnbull.
