Mount Isa Hockey Association, local schools and Hockey Queensland’s Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program have been working together to deliver an inclusive hockey program to local Mount Isa children.
Over 170 children from grades K-6 will participate in the 9 week program which will consist of school based hockey sessions culminating with a celebratory hockey Gala Day.
The program began on July 11 and will run until September 9 with the Gala Day to be held on the final day of the program.
The children in the program will be down at Mount Isa Hockey Association from 4pm to enjoy round robins and fun games for all at the Gala Day.
Local Hockey Queensland Indigenous Development Officer Hope Philip has been central to the organisation and facilitation of the program.
“We wanted to start the program to strengthen participation for the MIHA, and it has grown much more than we could have imagined,” Mr Hope said.
“The community and schools involved gave us such a positive reaction to the program that a number of amazing local coaches had to step up and volunteer their time to be able to run the program for the large number of the children that enrolled.”
“Our aim will eventually be to make hockey a school-based sport and to give our local kids more structured pathways to play hockey, including representative teams for Hockey Queensland.”
Hockey Queensland’s Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program Manager, Daniel Egan, is looking forward to the positive outcomes the program will create for the community.
“The Program has allowed Hockey Queensland to engage with the Mount Isa primary school community and provide a pathway for all participants Indigenous and non-Indigenous. The purpose of the Mount Isa School Hockey Program is to develop and deliver a hockey program that grows participation, pathways and positive social changes.”
“Hockey Queensland hopes that this program will stimulate hockey for the Mount Isa Hockey Association, who have been very proactive in developing hockey in the region”
