The Western Bulldog has recovered well from surgery to mend tibia and fibula bones in his left leg, and hopes to be able to start a walking program within the next three months.

Wallis has plans to be back into full training after the Christmas break, but has already spoken with the club psychologist about what he knows will be a long and bumpy road back.

Speaking with Michael Barlow - on the second episode of the Fremantle player's podcast, Out of Bounds - Wallis described what it felt like to look down during the game against St Kilda and take in the damage done.

"Obviously I knew how severe it was when I did it, because I looked down and my leg was pointing the wrong way and I tried to lift up my calf and it was just this intense pain," he said.

"I think some players around me realised it as well, they rushed over to check that I was OK and from there people talk as if it's a blur, but it wasn't really a blur for me.

"I had some pain relief but it wasn't really working. I was in so much pain and I was quite vocal, some of the onlookers were saying.

"Then going into the room you see your parents, and my girlfriend came down as well, and you get a bit of comfort when you see them and they know that you're OK.

"It's not the end of the world but going from there - cutting the boot off, then cutting stock and the tape, that was quite horrendous."

Wallis said he wasn't sure whether he would be able to watch footage of the incident, where he kicked the back of his leg while being tackled.

"I haven't (watched it yet), obviously through my own choice," he said.

"I've seen some stills and whatnot, but I haven't actually watched the vision from start to finish and I'm going to try and hold off until I'm all better.

"I don't want (any recurring thoughts) of the actual injury but we'll just have to wait and see."

Wallis told Barlow his surgeon, David Young, had been encouraged by how well his bones had re-aligned, and that he had been put into a "revolutionary" moon boot to help his recovery.

"I'll go into the club later this week to talk to the physios and the rehab staff to start getting a program together," he said.

"I'll be on crutches and non-weight-bearing for six weeks, and then I've got a further six weeks of walking in the boot which will lead me to 12 weeks.

"From 12 weeks I'm beginning my walking rehab, and from there I think within a month I'm running.

"There's little milestones I have to get to to tick these things off, but hopefully by the start of preseason I'm allowed to be running around.

"Then I think the surgeon wants to get the plates out of my legs, which will happen hopefully before the year's out so I can start up January with no plates and a fresh leg and hopefully some fitness under my belt to attack the new season."

Wallis has had teammate Dale Morris - another member of the broken leg club - around for dinner already, and spoke also of his devastation for forward Jack Redpath.

Redpath suffered his third major knee injury on the same night Wallis was injured.

"We lost the game, we lost two of our soldiers and we're such a tight knit group," he said. "If one hurts, we all hurt."
