On Thursday August 4, St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School hosted a Mini Murri’s Day coinciding with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.
The morning was filled full of fun activities for the Kindergarten schools and community groups from around Mount Isa.
St Kieran’s indigenous education adviser, Gail Laffin, organised the Mini Murri’s event and said it was aimed at bringing the community together.
“We love engaging with the Mount Isa community,” Ms Laffin said.
“It was a special day where we acknowledged the future leaders for our indigenous community.
“All our activities on the day were student driven. Indigenous students were asked what activities they wanted to run and they were to organise and conduct them.”
Students organised, face painting, coloured hairspray, building blocks, sand pit, play ground, obstacle course, parachute games and a visit from the Queensland Police.
Eileen Fisher Memorial Kindergarten, Estelle Cardiff Community Kindergarten, St Mary MacKillop Early Learning Centre, Injilinji Pre-School & Kindergarten and Goodstart Early Learning attended the day of celebration.
Indigenous scholarship holders from Good Shepherd Catholic College attended the Mini Murri’s Day assisting students and kindergarten visitors in a leadership capacity.
“With other national days of celebration we find the little ones tend to miss out a lot, so we wanted to engage with them and show them what St Kieran’s school was all about,” Ms Laffin said.
“We wanted to show the kindergarten students that if they decide to come to St Kieran’s that they are coming into a loving, caring community.
“It is great to see children of all different age levels come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Children’s Day.”
