'Going Grey' is looking for foster carers who can help prepare greyhounds for life after the track with New South Wales to ban the sport next year, while Queensland has put it "on notice".

"We've been looking at this program for about two years and decided it was timely to launch it now when there is a lot of interest," league spokeswoman Shan Veivers said.

The program will help greyhounds go straight into foster care and then their new adoptive homes, rather than being kennelled at any stage.

"This program is designed to acclimatise them to household living with specifically trained foster carers," league president Sylvana Wenderhold said.

"Many of the former racing dogs we re-home have never had any experience with stairs, glass doors, roads, swimming pools or ever stepped inside a home.

"We have had a long association with greyhounds, their care and re-homing and we want to ensure that they have the best start in their new lives."

Foster carers will receive face-to-face training, ongoing support and a 25-page support manual, which is also available online for anyone interested in fostering or adopting.

In 2015 the league re-homed more than 80 greyhounds and expects the number to increase ahead of the New South Wales greyhound racing ban, which comes into effect on July 1 next year.

"We fully support the greyhound ban and have worked tirelessly to see it become a national reality," Ms Wenderhold said.

"Since the ban was announced last month we've been delighted to see the number of people interested in specifically re-homing greyhounds increase."

The program aims to change public perceptions of greyhounds and promote them as loving and gentle dogs.

"It's all about people having a great experience as well as the dogs," Ms Veivers said.
