CANCER survivor Andrea Creagh will lace up and lead the 2016 Red Dirt Relay For Life with one simple goal – to give hope to others in her community touched by cancer.

The Hughenden local has been named Face of the Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life, set to be held on September 3-4 at the Cloncurry Recreation Grounds.
Ms Creagh was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in 2009, and underwent chemotherapy, followed by a mastectomy and radiation. She travelled over 400km to receive treatment, but with the overwhelming support of friends and family, she beat the disease. Now determined to use her experience to support others affected by cancer.
“I am very humbled and feel very proud that I have been asked to be the Face of Relay,” Ms Creagh said.
“This is a disease that affects so many people in so many ways. I don't think I have ever known anyone who is untouched by this disease in one way or another.”
The Red Dirt Relay For Life will see teams keep a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run for 18 hours overnight, in support of more than 26,000 Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer each year.
Ms Creagh encouraged the community to get behind the cause.
“I am so happy to be able to promote awareness and help raise funds in such fun way. We have had quiz nights, raffles and cake stalls,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to Red Dirt Relay for Life as it is a celebration of the fact that we can beat cancer with the help of friends and family.
“Cancer Council relies on community support to help ease the financial and emotional burden that cancer puts on families. The investment into research for treatment and cures is invaluable – and a world without cancer would be incredible.”
Survivors and carers are invited to join Mrs Creagh and take part in the opening lap of Relay, followed by an afternoon tea.
Locals can register at the Relay registration desk at the Cloncurry Recreation Showgrounds on Saturday, September 3 from 1pm.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson, Katie Clift, challenged locals in North West Queensland to start fundraising.
“Relay For Life is an event which unites the community and offers vital support to those who need it most,” Ms Clift said.
“By walking at Relay, providing physical or emotional support, or even fundraising to ensure Queenslanders have access to support services, we can give hope for a cancer free future.”
