To limit public embarrassment against the man who undoubtedly has a less-than-impressed wife out of town when this happened, he will only be referred to as the ‘budgie smuggler cowboy.’
The brand Budgy Smuggler runs a competition seeking Australia’s most ordinary rig, which Mount Isa’s “keen smuggler” knew of.
“You don’t get any more ordinary than this,” he said, referring to his own rig.
“I don’t mind getting the birds out to sing from time to time. And I’m also passionate about dance.
“But anyway, my beautiful wife has been away for a couple of weeks and I was getting low on undies, so just chucked the smugglers on as I ran out of the house.
“And as you do on rodeo Saturday I was on the heavy sip with the boys, one thing led to another. Jumped the fence and went for it.”
The colour coordinated socks were a fluke, he said.
The Isa Rodeo manager Natalie Flecker seemed unimpressed with the budgie smuggler cowboy’s unplanned performance.
“It’s not to be encouraged but I suppose we should be grateful he kept his hat, undies and socks on in true Outback style,” she said.
Ms Flecker would have a more serious tone if it had happened during a competition.
“It would be an entirely different matter as it could endanger competitors, animals or themselves.”
Mount Isa Police Sergeant Jeremy Young said that no charges were made against the man.
“Most of the people thought it was part of the show anyway,” Sergeant Young said.
Jemloco Images captured the moment in Buchanan Park and was the first to refer to him as the ‘Budgie Smuggler Cowboy’, describing it as “a real treat”.
“Who doesn’t love a streaker at any amazing Australian sporting event?” the photographer business posted.
“Isa Rodeo did not miss out this year with this cowboy all dressed up in his budgie smugglers and ready to put on a show.
“You gotta love Outback Queensland and its people bringing you all the laughs.”
A social media commentator based in Adelaide said that some people don’t know any other way of getting attention. “Like the Collingwood supporter who wears a shiny gold coat when he thinks his team is going to win. I love the way sport has these characters, but only in Australia.” Budgy Smuggler learned of the stunt and said; “Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear Akubras.”
