Vietnam veteran John Langston said he thought there was supposed to be a healthy trading relationship between Australia and Vietnam.
“You can’t sort of have it both ways,” Mr Langston said. “It would look funny if Germany and Turkey carried on the same way.
“I think it basically stinks to be honest. It’s certainly not going to help build bridges anyway.”
Mount Isa RSL sub-branch board member and Vietnam veteran Steve Wollaston said it was “bloody shocking” and “terrible” for the Vietnamese government to decide restrictions “at the last minute”.
Mr Wollaston had considered visiting the site this year but “was not real keen going back”.
ABC News reports that access to the site was limited to groups of 100 or fewer, and a ban made for medals, uniforms, and speeches.
