Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay officially opens on September 1. The spectacular all-villa resort represents a quality and secure base from which to explore some of the country's best attractions.
Tamouda Bay itself is a lure for scuba divers and whale watchers. The Rif Mountains are nearby for hikers and so too, is Cabo Negro, renowned for its beaches and horseback riding. The Cabo Negro Royal Golf Club in Tetouan, and the Tangier Royal Golf Club, are both located in the foothills of the Rif Mountains.
The medina of Tetouan, locally known as the "White Dove" and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is 20 minutes from the resort, while Tangier is an hour away.
You may not want to leave though – Banyan Tree's inaugural venture in the Mediterranean and Africa features 92 villas, all with awe-inspiring views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Ranging from 200 to 423 square metres, each villa has its own garden and private pool, and some have direct access to the beach.
The resort has two main pools, one adults only and the other for families, four restaurants and 24-hour in-villa dining, plus a fine example of Banyan Tree's legendary spas, comprising six Deluxe treatment rooms, two Royal treatment rooms, a Hydro and Vitality Pool, hammam and yoga room.
There's also a kids' club.
A special rate for October stays in a Bliss Pool Villa works out around $640 a night. See www.banyantree.com
