The south-east corner shivered through sub-20-degree temperatures on Wednesday morning, with Brisbane recording its hottest winter night on record.
A mere 19.4 degrees. That was as cool as it got in the state's capital, just after sunrise, although the Bureau of Meteorology wasn't ready to call it a record just after 7am.
"There's still two hours before we record our actual minimum and there is some rain about so it could drop below," BOM forecaster James Thompson said.
"At the moment it is ... about 10 degrees above the average of 9.7 so pretty warm morning with that cloud cover around."
But when 9am rolled around and the mercury had risen to almost 21 degrees, it was official.
Real kick-your-leg-out-from-under-the-sheet weather.
The rest of south-east Queensland experienced a similar sweaty attempt at a winter night, with temperatures staying roughly eight degrees above average throughout the region.
The last time the overnight temperatures stayed so warm in Brisbane was 2009, when the mercury just barely stayed above 19 degrees (19.2) on August 29.
On Wednesday morning, Ipswich dropped to 19.1 degrees, with 18.9 on the Sunshine Coast and a basically Antarctic 10.4 on the Gold Coast Seaway.
Warm nights usually occur when clouds trap the hot air from the day in the atmosphere, not letting it escape overnight.
Mr Thompson said Tuesday night was no different.
"We had quite a moist warm air mass ahead of the trough that's coming through today as well," Mr Thompson said.
"So in the low levels we had warm air and then as that cloud came over it just kept that warm air through the night."
That trough saw more reasonable amounts of rain dumped on some areas of the Granite Belt border ranges, with 42 millimetres at Applethorpe and 40 at Warwick.
Mr Thompson expected that weather system to continue east toward the coast, with Brisbane likely to see three to 15 millimetres to go with a top of 22, with a similar outlook on the Sunshine Coast.
South to the Gold Coast, the bureau was predicting heavier falls of 20 to 50 millimetres.
Brisbane's highest June minimum on record was 18.3 degrees, with July only ever dropping to 18.5, according to Mr Thompson.
