The Camooweal Drover's Camp, which opens from May to September each year, is a national shrine to acknowledge the contribution to Australia's cattle industry development by stockmen and stockwoman and what they started back in 1996 as a small celebration of Australia’s stockman heritage has grown into one of the largest festivals in north-west Queensland.
And word has got out among the travelling community that Camooweal is the place to be at the end of August.
The town was packed for the weekend with many grey nomads telling the North West Star this was not the first time they had come to Camooweal for the event, with travelling specially for the event.
On Friday night the party was downturn with a with a street parade that seemingly involved all 300 of the town’s residents and an assorted cast of characters that included Bundy Bear, the Light Horse and a truck dressed up like Ned Kelly.
That was followed by entertainment and a concert in the lane next to the pub.
On Saturday and Sunday the party moved on to the Drovers Camp itself with bronco branding and a concert from Slim Dusty’s daughter Anne Kirkpatrick.
The town’s annual races also packed them in on Saturday afternoon.
