Petero needs no introduction to the Isa having been here a number of times before. Besides rugby league this legend is a great ambassador for sport in general and one who has inspired many young people to strive in their chosen sports.
Instrumental in bringing Robbie to Mount Isa has been Gidgee Healing with the MomenTIM Program. The MomenTIM Program aims to increase awareness and knowledge regarding social and emotional wellbeing and mental health issues for young indigenous men.
Having acted as mentor to many young people in Melbourne Robbie will be holding workshops with youth workers plus also hosting sessions with the youth of Mount
On their arrival on the Friday evening both Petero and Robbie will be guests at a meet and greet evening at the Outback at Isa. Along with visiting fighters, trainers, referees and judges flying in for the weekend, they will meetup with locals and youth workers.
One of the sessions with Robbie will be held down at the basketball courts on the afternoon prior to the fight night where he will cast an eye over a few of Mount Isa’s up and coming young boxers and possibly get in the ring for a sparring session with one or two of them. One can only imagine the thrill for a young boxer to be able to say he sparred with a former world champion.
Co-promoter, Scott Crawford, has been compiling an impressive list of local and visiting fighters for what should be an exciting evening of at least twelve bouts.
“Many of these lads have quite a quite a bit of experience and there promises to be some excellent bouts with most results I’m predicting going down to the wire,” Crawford said.
“At this stage there could possibly be one or two fighters coming over from the coast with Mornington Island looking at sending a couple of their fighters down,” he added.
Paul Slater of the Department Sport and Recreation, himself a highly respected boxer in his day, has seen these guys in action during visits to Mornington and is in no doubt the lads will certainly hold their own in whatever division they fight in.
“These Island lads always guarantee a first class act and the boys coming down won’t let anyone go home disappointed”, Slater added.
The venue for the night is the Mount Isa Basketball Courts. Table seating is available although these are being snapped up fast with VIP and second tier tables already sold out. To reserve a table call Tanya on 0431 399 115 or Bret on 0403 510 125. General admission is available on the night although this will be limited. Doors open at 6.00pm for a meet and greet with Robbie and Petero before the first bout at 7.15 pm.
