Organisers took the decision Thursday to move Friday’s racing to Sunday though the Birdsville Cup will at the time of writing run as scheduled on Saturday, despite another 60mm falling overnight.
On Thursday the roads to Birdsville from Maree, Windorah and Bedourie were all closed off and the town received another 50mms overnight.
The two-day Birdsville race meeting is part of the Triple Crown Series, that includes Betoota and Bedourie.
With Betoota already held, a field of 121 horses will race having travelled as far as Darwin, Tamworth and the Sunshine Coast.
Successful Barcaldine trainer Todd Austin leads the nominations,
He has a team of 10 horses. Mount Isa’s Andrew Saunders won in 2015 with Iron Meteorite. Other former Birdsville Cup winning trainers include Jay Morris of Mount Isa.
Also there are Richard Simpson, Longreach, Jay Morris, Mt Isa, Ray Hermann, Winton, Craig Smith, Roma, and Rodney Robb, Nyngan, NSW.
