Vickery, who also plays in the ruck, is said to have been saying goodbye to his Tigers' teammates before he heads to Waverley.
The 26-year-old has been the subject of criticism from both Richmond supporters and opposition fans for on-field mistakes and Vickery is said to be sick of being blamed for the Tigers' troubles.
Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson has a history of recruiting well and bringing out the best in his players.
The move would also offer Vickery a better chance of playing finals soon - Richmond finished the home-and-away season a disappointing 13th on the ladder this year, the reigning premiers were third.
Representatives of both clubs have been approached for comment.
