On Wednesday specialist contractors commenced an assessment of Mount Isa’s water network using non-intrusive acoustic techniques.
MICC Director of Engineering Services Mike Salmon said their task was to locate hidden leaks in the MICC water pipes.
“While MICC reported water losses are well within industry practice, our arid climate means our drinking water is especially precious” Mr Salmon said.
“Water loss management is one of the important tools for industry best practice. It has been a number of years since a full assessment of the Mount Isa distribution system was undertaken, now is a great opportunity to review and improve our infrastructure.”
MIWB’s Chief Executive, Stephen Farrelly said while the board didn’t own or operate the water pipes, they were working closely with MICC to ensure the best outcome for the community.
“With the new treatment plant in place, every litre of loss eliminated from the distribution network is a litre we do not have to treat,” he said.
“Ultimately, this work is an investment in saving the community money”.
Mount Isa City Council is the city’s water supply service provider.
