Former Premier and Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett says the tenure of Collingwood president Eddie McGuire at Collingwood is "a long time" and sometimes good leadership requires new thinking.

With news that McGuire would seek another three years at the Magpies, Kennett said clubs like Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn had been rebuilt by strong and bold leadership, but shorter tenures gave the chance for renewal.
"I've had some discussions with Ed about this in the past," Kennett said on SEN. "Ed has been wonderful for Collingwood, there's no doubt about that ... those clubs were winless and broke and they have been built into the powerhouses of today.
"Having said that, I do think that there is a time. There is a time for the individual and a time for the club and you have to introduce new ingredients, new thoughts, new practices.
"Ed has got every right to stand again and I don't deny him. It's not something I would have done. I didn't do (it). I said six years ... He's been there about 18 ... it's a long time. "
Kennett, who like McGuire was an often controversial figure as president, said he did not regret ending his time early.
"At Hawthorn we didn't have a term limit on a president and I made a decision with the board then whether we would go for two terms of three years each which would be six years or nine years. And I argued for six years on the belief that if you couldn't achieve what you wanted by putting in - and I really mean putting in - in six years, then you were probably never going to.
"I don't regret that. I think it was the right decision for the club and the right decision for me. Every club and every individual will be slightly different."
