I was at the Birdsville Bakery for lunch on the weekend when I noticed what at first looked like a large cardboard cutout image of prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

On closer inspection it wasn’t a cutout but an actual photograph of Mr Turnbull at the Bakery where he was standing next to the bakery’s owner while eating one of the bakery’s famed curried camel pies.
The photo was taken in August 2015 when as then communications minister he toured the area with now-retired Maranoa MP Bruce Scott to check out some of the woeful telecommunications experiences in western Queensland.
Perhaps some of the complaints he was getting explains the slightly rueful look on Mr Turnbull’s face but things were about to change drastically in the coming weeks.
What happened next is explained in the caption under the photograph in the Birdsville Bakery:
"Old mate Malc got the top job 2 weeks after he had a Curried Camel Pie! What will it do for you?"
The “top job” he got was the prime ministership of Australia after he rolled Tony Abbott in a leadership spill later that month.
And ever since “old mate Malc” has been wearing that same rueful grin as if he ought to be pleased about what has happened but can’t quite bring himself to be happy.
Despite winning an election Mr Turnbull is looking a bit lost and lonely and unsure of what his next move should be.
To what end did he replace Mr Abbott other than simply not repeat his incompetence?
What great vision does Mr Turnbull have for the nation and is it shackled behind the compromises he had to make with Abbott supporters to get the top job?
If the curried camel pie had anything to with his ascension (and who are we mortals to suggest otherwise?) perhaps Mr Turnbull could return for another one to seek inspiration for the months and years ahead.
As for me, I didn’t find out what a curried camel pie could do, plumping for the chicken and mayo roll instead.
Instead of leadership, the only thing I spilled was breadcrumbs.
