Luke Breust's agent has quashed claims the classy forward could be traded by Hawthorn.

Three-time premiership Hawk Breust, 25, is contracted to Hawthorn until the end of 2017, but last week's decision by wantaway Gold Coast midfielder Jaeger O'Meara to request a move to Waverley sparked talk that the Riverina product could form part of a potential exchange.

Over the weekend, leading pundit Wayne Carey floated Breust's name as one that could be on the trade table when Hawthorn work to orchestrate a deal with the Suns.

But Breust's manager Neil McMullin of OMP Sports Management said that he had no reason to believe his client would be moving from the Hawks.

"As far as my knowledge goes after recent talks at the Hawks and with Luke, there is no basis [to the discussion]," McMullin told Fairfax Media on Sunday.

North Melbourne great Carey claimed on Triple M that Breust had been informed he was expendable. "They're going to have to give a few things away, " Carey said on Saturday.

"The players that have currency are the players that have played in premierships.

"I'm hearing that Luke Breust has been told, which I found very surprising, he got told during the week that if a deal could be done that he may be one of the ones [that could be traded]."

While he hails from NSW, Breust is believed to be happy living in Melbourne. Taken as a rookie at the end of 2008, Breust has kicked 271 goals from his 140 games at Hawthorn, and was picked in the 2014 All-Australian team.

Emerging forward James Sicily, and fringe midfielders Will Langford and Billy Hartung are others who have been mentioned as possible lure for the Suns, although the Hawks may be loathe to give up Hartung given the likely departure of fellow outside runner Brad Hill.

The Hawks appear likely to need to discard a player of value given they are also vying for the services of Sydney midfielder Tom Mitchell and Richmond forward Ty Vickery - both of whom are out-of-contract - complicates the situation, although the Hawks will likely receive an extra draft pick with which to deal should Hill be traded to Fremantle. It emerged mid-season that Hill had met with Dockers coach Ross Lyon with a view to the speedster joining older brother Stephen in Western Australia.

The Hawks' tilt at a record-equalling fourth straight premiership ended on Friday night as they were swamped in the second half by the resurgent Western Bulldogs. Coach Alastair Clarkson said post-match that the Hawks would look at various avenues to improving their list, although conceded that ensuring the O'Meara trade proceeds could be a challenge.

"Jaeger's indicated that he wants to come to Melbourne to play his footy. How that gets done will probably be pretty difficult I reckon. But [recruiting and list manager] Graham Wright - the guy that's in charge of that area of our footy club - will sit down with Gold Coast some time over the next few weeks and try to work out a deal," Clarkson said.

"Like we've always done with our list - and every club in the competition's the same - you're looking to improve your squad. Is that through drafting? Is it through trading? Is it through free agency? All those mechanisms will be looked at."

Clarkson was also was hopeful that Coleman medallist Jarryd Roughead could return for the 2017 campaign after missing all of this year, first with a knee injury and then with a recurrence of his melanoma. Hawthorn earlier this year re-signed veterans Josh Gibson, Shaun Burgoyne, Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell for 2017 ahead of what looms as the experienced quartet's final chance at another premiership together.

Set to lose both O'Meara and Dion Prestia - who has asked for a move to Richmond - Gold Coast could gain further first-round picks, already possessing two in this year's draft. The Suns are in the race for out-of-favour Collingwood big man Jarrod Witts, who has also been linked with the Brisbane Lions.
