Fairfax Media can reveal the Brumbies are working with competition officials to get clearance to use the Singapore Airlines route from the capital to Wellington next year.

The change in travel schedule would cut at least five hours off the Brumbies' time on the road as they attempt to resurrect a dismal record across the ditch.

SANZAAR uses Qantas as its airline partner for flights between Australia and New Zealand. Singapore Airlines, which completed its first international visit to Canberra on Wednesday, is not part of the Qantas group.

It's understood the Brumbies have put in a request to allow them to cut their travel time on the way to New Zealand before switching back to Qantas and flying home via Sydney after the match.

The Brumbies lost both of their games in New Zealand this year, suffering defeats at the hands of the Otago Highlanders and Auckland Blues.

They will start their 2017 campaign against the Canterbury Crusaders in New Zealand before clashing against the Wellington Hurricanes on April 21.

The Brumbies have lost their past four games in New Zealand and have only won once since the 2013 grand final.

"Speaking to a few of the coaches, there might be a few things we change up during the pre-season [after losing in New Zealand]," Brumbies lock Blake Enever said.

"We learnt a bit from the New Zealand teams and hopefully we can find a way to counteract them and improve our game as well."

The Brumbies will play four of their first six games in Canberra next year, including a battle against former club stars George Smith and Stephen Moore when they return with the Queensland Reds.

Their round-nine trip to Wellington looms as a season-defining moment against the defending champion Hurricanes.

Instead of rising at 4.30am to fly from Canberra to Sydney and then on to Wellington, the Brumbies are hoping to use the Capital Express route to turn a nine-hour travel day into a three-hour flight.

"I think we can definitely benefit from that, taking out any time on travel days, especially in a short week, would be really beneficial," Enever said.

"We spend a lot of time going to Sydney and then going from there so it would be really good for us.

"First up we play the Crusaders away and early on is when we'll have to hit the ground running."

The Brumbies play against four New Zealand teams in their first nine games of the season.

Australian teams struggled against New Zealand opponents this year, winning just three of 24 trans-Tasman battles in the 2016 campaign.

Super Rugby bosses published the draw for next year earlier this week with the Brumbies missing out on a rivalry clash against the NSW Waratahs in Canberra.

The Super Rugby restructure, which was implemented this year, changes the home-and-away Australian series to increase the amount of games against New Zealand opponents.

The Brumbies will host cross-code superstar Sonny Bill Williams when he returns for the Auckland Blues at Canberra Stadium on April 30 and finish their season with four of their last five games on the road.
