In announcing the new development on Marshall Street, the assistant minister for local government Jennifer Howard said the government will spend $2 million to develop the land as part of an initiative to promote opportunities in regional Queensland.
“Modern housing is vital in remote communities to attract and retain important service workers,” Ms Howard said.
“The Government is working in partnership with the Burke Shire Council to address a shortage of residential land, by building an estate with essential infrastructure for power, water, sewage and new roads.
“This project will bring key workers including doctors, police, teachers and community workers who want to live in modern and energy efficient homes close to the town centre.
“This is a great example of the State Government working with remote councils and the private sector to meet the housing needs of the community and boost local economies through housing sales and job creation.
“We are listening to regional and remote Queensland and bringing infrastructure projects forward to ensure a positive future for our small towns.”
Interested parties are being called on to submit expressions of interest to purchase the first nine residential lots.
Freehold land starts at just $40,000 with a preference for owner occupiers who build and occupy a home within 12 or 24 months. Investors also receive a preference if they build and make the property available for rent.
Economic Development Queensland on behalf of the Queensland Government will invest $2 million in the project and build the essential infrastructure for the residential lots, with works expected to start in October 2016.
