Speaking after making his return to NSW grade cricket, joining his former club Western Suburbs in the first game of the NSW Premier Cricket competition, Clarke said he thinks Khawaja will start in the first Test.

"I thought he had a magnificent summer in Australia," Clarke said. "I think he is extremely talented and a top fellow as well. So he's a big part of their team.

"I think they didn't pick him in Sri Lanka based on conditions, but knowing 'Uzzy', I think he would've learnt a lot in Sri Lanka ... and he'll be working hard for the next time he gets an opportunity to play in the subcontinent, he's ready."

The former Australian captain said Western Suburbs means "the world to me" and was the reason behind his return to club.

"What I love most about this club is they really look after you from a very young age," he said. "They've always been extremely loyal to me and been there to help me through some tough times, and now it's my opportunity to try and give back to them."

Despite feeling "a little rusty", he was looking forward to getting back out in the middle. Clarke did admit he hasn't had "too many hits in the last couple of months" but was thrilled to be back in the middle.

"It's nice to be back around the boys and to stand at slip to a few leggies as well. It brings back some good memories."

But Clarke firmly ruled out the possibility of a stint in the Big Bash League, saying his Channel Nine commentary contract precluded any involvement.

Clarke is playing alongside 16-year-old leg-spinner Sandeep​ Lamichhane, who has become just the second player born in the 2000s to play first grade, and the first born in Nepal.

Although Clarke refused to compare Lamichhane to Shane Warne​, he said he had "a beautiful action, but it's his mind that I like. For a 16-year-old boy, this kid is very smart."

Lamichhane described Clarke as "a mentor to me" and was very thankful for the role he played in bringing him to the club.
