Just ask Paul Leworthy, 42, who saw his neighbour James Best splash a coat of red, white and blue paint all over his front fence in Seddon after the Bulldogs pulled off a historic grand finals berth.

The two mates had made a bet on Saturday night that Mr Best would paint his home's picket fence in club colours if the Bulldogs beat Greater Western Sydney.

"And I looked out my front door the next morning and there he was, painting it," Mr Leworthy said. "I was laughing."

Mr Best, 44, follows St Kilda, but was happy to lose the bet and complete the Sunday home reno in support of his neighbour's team.

"I've got a soft spot for them, actually. I'm hoping they'll win next week as well," he said.

"It's been a funny day though. People have been coming by, beeping the horn, having a wave."

And he's not alone in showing such colourful support for the Bulldogs.

There's already a painting store in West Footscray that has been decorated in red, white and blue and another house in Footscray that's followed suit.

Col Kelly told his wife he would add red and blue stripes to their white picket fence if the Bulldogs made the final - and he did just that, with a bit of help from his brother-in-law.

"It doesn't have to be permanent, but you could leave it up after football season if you wanted to, " said Mr Kelly, who adopted the team after moving to Melbourne from Adelaide about seven years ago.

"Now it's up on Facebook and it's become really popular."

So have these Doggies fans started a new trend?

"Who knows, but it's sure good to get into it," Mr Best said.

"It's exciting. Everybody here's got a spring in their step."
