More locals are able to practice canoeing in a dragon boat with recent purchases by the North West Canoe Club.
Three dragon boats are owned by the club. They seat 20 people each.
Club secretary Alison Whitehead said one of the dragon boats had its maiden voyage on Saturday, September 17.
“Whilst half the paddlers had not paddled a dragon boat before, within half an hour we were moving along at a great pace,” she said.
“She six man tug-of-war in the dragon boat brought out our competitive streak and a few sore muscles the next day.”
Ms Whitehead said the club was offering free Come N Try Days in October, with the first held this Saturday.
These sessions begin at the clubhouse at 3.30pm on these days.
“The boats are suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers and the canoe club will provide life jackets, paddles and paddling instruction,” she said.
“We would like to encourage sporting teams, business groups and individuals to come and have some fun at the lake.”
The club already owns sit-on-top plastic kayaks and the TK1 and K1 models.
The Commerce North West Dragon Boat Regatta is held at 3pm on Saturday, October 29, during the Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic.
