As the sole journalist of the Barcoo Independent newspaper in Blackall, Ms Wheatcroft runs the whole office.
“I write the stories, sell advertising, layout the paper, print and deliver it,” she said,
“After almost closing due to the drought, I am happy to be helping a community keep its media outlet alive. The town is so passionate about their newspaper and I am proud to be delivering its news weekly.”
After publishing her first edition of the Barcoo Independent on September 9, Ms Wheatcroft said it would not have been possible without the assistance received in Isa.
“Mount Isa shaped me into the journalist I am today, especially assistance from Brad Thompson who was my editor during my cadetship. I now feel more confident running my own newspaper and learning new things within the industry that I love.
“I feel Blackall is a starting point to eventually running a larger newspaper.”
