A man allegedly broke into a house in Gladstone and attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl who was having a sleepover at the house.
Police say the man laid down on the mattress and touched the girl before trying to drag her outside, but her screams woke her grandfather who came to her aid.
Police tried to arrest a man at a nearby home in the Gladstone area on Sunday afternoon but he ran away, sparking a large-scale search.
Police eventually found the alleged offender in the backyard of a nearby home around 8.15pm on Sunday night and took him into custody. Police say the girl’s family was not known to the offender. The Gladstone Observer said “a 24-year-old from the Mount Isa and Townsville region was a person of interest in the case.”
