When Europe players Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan were struggling to make a 12-foot putt on the eighth green, one of the spectators began to mock them, claiming he could make the putt.

Stenson handed him a putter, while Justin Rose chipped in a $US100 ($131) bill against the fan making the shot at his first attempt.

Johnson stepped up, set himself, and nailed it.

"He's the man of the hour, the day, the week," Stenson told the Star Tribune.

"The boys were struggling with the line so Dave here offered to come out and show us how to do it."

"And he certainly did; drilled that 12-footer right in the back of the cup."

"Now, he can tell the whole world that the European team are the ones that have the most fun."

A clearly impressed Rose added: "I thought [the money] might make it a bit more real for him, but clearly not. The boys were cupping out, missing it low and this guy just ripped it into the middle. Fair play to him and he celebrated in style."

Johnson was philosophical in the aftermath of his feat of sporting excellence, telling reporters: "I razzed them a little bit, and they heard me, which was insane."

"I closed my eyes, swallowed my puke, and hit the putt."
