With the Queen's Birthday public holiday upon us and the weather finally returning to normal temperature programming, no doubt hordes of Queenslanders will be hitting the beach.

But if Bureau of Meteorology forecasters are right, the sun will only be shining on Sunday.

The mercury is expected to make its way up to 28, with a gentle westerly breeze to ensure optimum outdoor comfort as it makes its way in a north-westerly direction.

But there ends the good news.

On Monday, Queensland snatches back her glorious weekend weather and throws on some cloud cover for the Queen's Birthday marches before showers and the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening.

Up to 10 millimetres of moisture can be expected on Monday, so not too drenching but enough to ensure any beach barbecue plans are thrown out the window.

If you have been clever enough to extend your long-weekend a little further, things improve from Tuesday with sunny days expected until Thursday.

Surf Life Saving Queensland's Jason Argent said conditions would be good for swimming over the weekend but urged people to ensure they stayed between the red and yellow flags.

"We are going to see surf ranging from 2-3 foot across the Gold and Sunshine Coast over the weekend," he said.

"Winds will increase in the afternoons therefore the best conditions will be in the morning.

"There's going to be a mid-morning high tide on both coasts so we are urging swimmers to be cautious at those tide changes."
