The former Canberra Raiders hooker was convinced his teammates were playing a prank when an unknown number popped up and the caller said he was Neil Henry.

But then Raiders coach Henry wasn't joking and greenkeeper Buttriss moved from Brisbane to Canberra to be the Green Machine's new No.9.

The curtain officially came down on Buttriss' NRL career when he joined some of the game's greats in a lap of honour at the grand final on Sunday night.

The nuggety, hard-working rake played 119 games for the Raiders after making his debut in 2008 and answering an SOS call from Henry after Todd Carney was sacked.

He was an unheralded player during the Raiders up and down years between 2008 and 2015, but Buttriss says he walks away with no regrets.

"When I moved to Souths Logan I was unsure if I would ever play NRL and then when Neil Henry called I thought it was a joke," Buttriss said.

"It was a spin-out. The end came a bit unexpected because I thought I had a year or two left in me.

"But it wasn't to be and that's all good, I understand that and I've got no regrets. I met a lot of great people along the way and enjoyed the ride while it lasted."

Cootamundra junior Buttriss and the Raiders parted ways last year when Josh Hodgson arrived in the capital, but the 31-year-old was in talks with rivals clubs to continue his first-grade career.

When he couldn't finalise a deal he signed to play with Mounties in the NSW Cup and is set to have a farewell season next year.

But on Sunday night he joined Brisbane champion Corey Norman, Sam Perrett, Ben Creagh and Anthony Watmough as part of a lap of honour.

Buttriss played in the Raiders' finals campaigns in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He even shifted to halfback in a 2008 final against the Cronulla Sharks.

Buttriss now spends his days helping with youth care work at schools and playing for Mounties.

"I had an absolute shocker that night, it was pretty bad in that semi-final," Buttriss laughed.

"The finals were definitely a highlight though, and my debut against Melbourne in 2008 as well.

"I still felt I could contribute at that level and 12 months has passed by now so I'm happy now.

"It probably still hasn't sunk in but I think by the time I sit back next week and think about it all, then that's when it will hit me."

Meanwhile, the Raiders have all but finalised a new contract for hooker Kurt Baptiste for the next two years.

It's understood Baptiste has verbally agreed to stay until at least the end of the 2018 season but the contract details are yet to be ticked off.

Raiders halfback Sam Williams has signed a one-year deal with English club Wakefield, while there has been speculation about the futures of Paul Vaughan and Shaun Fensom.

Fensom and Vaughan have contracts to stay in Canberra for the 2017 season, but rival clubs are sniffing around after both players spent time in the NSW Cup this year.
