The 21-year-old, who scored 19 tries en route to helping the Sharks secure a maiden NRL title, was banned from Queensland selection earlier this year after breaking team curfew, much to the ire of state coach Kevin Walters.

He comes off-contract at Cronulla next season alongside Ben Barba, Jack Bird, Sosaia Feki, Wade Graham and Chad Townsend, while Sam Tagataese is yet to re-sign beyond this year along with veteran Chris Heighington.

Holmes' 19-try season equalled David Peachey's club record and came after an embarrassing off-season where he was fined for being a public nuisance and obstructing police at a taxi rank in Brisbane while trying to press his claims as an Origin candidate.

Speaking after Sunday night's nail-biting triumph over the Melbourne Storm, Holmes conceded he wouldn't have been ready to play for his state this season, but said the grand final win had primed him for an Origin debut.

"Even if all that didn't happen at the start [of the year] I don't know if I would have been picked," Holmes said.

"I didn't dwell on it too much because I'm only young and I don't even know if I would have been ready myself. I'm glad I played in a grand final on a big stage like this and I'll be confident next year if I do get picked.

"There are unbelievable wingers, fullbacks and centres in the game right now. Dane Gagai scored three tries [in one Origin game] and Corey Oates has been killing it and played in a grand final last year.

"You can't go past them. You don't know what can happen.

"Everyone wants to play for their state or country and that's definitely a goal of mine."

Holmes' desire to stay at Cronulla will be further music to the ears of Sharks fans, who gathered in their thousands at Southern Cross Group Stadium on Monday to celebrate their drought-breaking premiership.

Only Canberra's Jordan Rapana and Melbourne's Suliasi Vunivalu scored more tries than Holmes this season.

"I've still got another year and I'm not leaving any time soon," Holmes said.

"I just didn't want to talk about that coming into the finals and now that the game's over and we've got the premiership we'll see what happens.

"I love Cronulla and live there at the moment. I can't see myself anywhere else."

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said on Monday he expected Holmes and centre Jack Bird to sign contract extensions in the offseason.

Clive Churchill medallist Luke Lewis is set to play one more season, while Paul Gallen will likely retire at the end of 2017, and Sharks chief executive Lyall Gorman has already turned his attention to retaining his younger stars.

Gorman believes the historic premiership win will help keep most of the playing group together.

"We've got to retain the players we have and I think they'll really buy into the club," Gorman said.

"There's a lot of great things that are happening at our club. You see how content this club is and there's a real sense of purpose here.

"There's that commitment now to come back and raise the bar again – not be satisfied with this year. You can't be happy with just one year and say, 'job done'.

"Our job is to raise the bar next year."
