The player and club have been at an impasse since July when Mitchell's manager Phil Mullen and Swans football manager Tom Harley opted to put off contract talks until the end of the season.

The AFL's trade period begins next week and Hawthorn needs to offer up at least a first-round draft pick to secure the 23-year-old, who kicked two goals in Saturday's 22-point grand final defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

Sydney's end-of-year celebrations on Monday were dampened by the result at the MCG, the club's second grand final loss in three seasons.

Parker, who courageously played the game with a left knee injury, said he and his teammates were still hopeful Mitchell would re-sign.

"I hope he stays, I'm sure he and the club will sort it out in the next few weeks or so," Parker said. "He's been a massive contributor and a big reason why we're so successful this year.

"As with all those young blokes coming through ... you see Tommy just getting better every year."

Mitchell was one of the Swans' best on Saturday, with 26 disposals and 13 tackles along with his two majors.

Speaking at the grand final parade on Friday, Mitchell told AFL.com.au he wouldn't consider his next move until after the decider.

"It's something I haven't thought about all season," Mitchell said. "I'm sure the club and my manager will worry about that when the season's done, but it hasn't affected me.

"I love Sydney and I love playing with a great bunch of blokes."

As keen as Mitchell appears to stay at the Swans, the difference in financial terms may be too wide to guarantee a resolution.

Sydney is being squeezed on its salary cap, which includes the hefty contracts of Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett, and a favourable trade for Mitchell will potentially allow the club to draft a player who can inject much-needed leg speed into the midfield.

Mitchell has also been linked to Carlton this season, but it's understood Hawthorn may be his preferred destination should he be traded.

He'd slot straight into the Hawks midfield as they desperately chase one last premiership before a wave of retirements.

Parker, meanwhile, says the Swans are already looking ahead to redemption next season after stumbling painfully again at the final hurdle.

"To have the opportunity to win and not take it ... it's pretty shattering," Parker said. "At the end of the day, that's football. We move on, we improve, and we look to next year and hopefully get another opportunity.

"We've shown that our best is very competitive and it's more the consistency of having a high standard every week and having the same mindset.

"It's hard to do over the course of a season. We saw in the two finals leading up to the grand final, we were really ruthless out there and pretty brutal and our pressure was huge.

"To then go into the grand final and be a little bit off in that area ... it was still competitive but we were outdone by the Bulldogs."

Parker finished runner-up in the Brownlow Medal count behind Patrick Dangerfield and kicked the first goal in Saturday's grand final, but was well below his best by managing just 19 touches.
