Despite having a year to run on his current deal, speculation had linked the impressive 23-year-old to a potential move to either Fremantle or West Coast in this month's trade period.

However, just 10 days after playing in the Giants' heartbreaking six-point preliminary final loss to the Western Bulldogs, Lobb has put pen to paper and will stay in Sydney's west until the end of 2019 at least.

Lobb had a breakout year in 2016, ranking second in the competition for contested marks, averaging 11 touches a game and kicking 29 goals.

"I'm really happy to have re-signed with the Giants," said Lobb.

"As a playing group we took some big steps this year and I think there is still plenty of improvement in us which is exciting.

"I've grown really close to my teammates and I believe that if we stick together, we can hopefully achieve the ultimate success in the future."

With Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan also turning his back on a return to Western Australia on Tuesday morning by re-signing with the Demons, Fremantle especially are running out of key forward options to add to their list this trade period.

The Dockers are also seeking a long-term replacement for the ageing Aaron Sandilands, while the Eagles are light on in the ruck department after a serious knee injury to Nic Naitanui late this season.

Lobb's former teammate Cam McCarthy will almost certainly join the Dockers this month and Freo might consider courting fringe Geelong forward Shane Kersten for extra support for inexperienced duo Matt Taberner and Michael Apeness.

Lobb joins Hogan, Travis Cloke, Jack Riewoldt and Mitch Clark in a long line of key forward targets who Fremantle have failed to recruit in recent years.

The Eagles would be disappointed to miss out on Lobb and Hogan too, but, with Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling on their books, aren't as desperate for key forwards as their cross-town rivals who are trying to replace the retired Matthew Pavlich.

Since being taken at pick No.29 in the 2013 draft, Lobb has played 35 games and kicked 36 goals for GWS.

He joins Stephen Coniglio in extending his stay until 2019, after the midfielder put pen to paper last month.

Tom Scully, Jeremy Cameron and Callan Ward have also committed their long-term futures to GWS, who missed a spot in this year's AFL decider after losing by a goal to eventual premiers the Western Bulldogs in the preliminary final.
