After a difficult 2016 campaign, during which Maric struggled with a back injury and was overtaken in the Punt Road pecking order by Shaun Hampson, it was expected that Maric would seek opportunities elsewhere.

He met Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley during the finals series about a deal in which he would take a player/coaching role.

But after weighing up his options, the 30-year-old eventually decided to stay at the Tigers.

"After a personally testing year, I took time to consider my options, but ultimately the friendships and connections I have with my teammates make Richmond my home, and where I belong," Maric said.

"I believe I am capable of playing good football at AFL level, and will continue to show guidance and leadership on and off the field."

After playing all 22 games in Richmond's 2015 season, Maric's fall from grace was quick and unexpected less than 12 months later.

A lingering back injury sidelined him for the opening month of the season before he played in the round five and six losses to Melbourne and Port Adelaide respectively.

Struggling for form, he played in the senior team only one more time for the year.

The Tigers' general manager of football talent Dan Richardson said it was a positive signing for the club.

"Ivan is a fierce competitor and gives his all in every training session and game he plays, and his teammates thrive off that," he told the club's website.

"He's also a great leader and positive role model, not just for his teammates, but everyone at the club, and we look forward to seeing more of that in 2017."
