Both players have publicly declared their preferred destinations, with O'Meara nominating Hawthorn and Prestia keen to get to Richmond.

While a trade for O'Meara is still being worked out, it had been largely accepted in football circles that the Tigers would part way with pick 6 for Prestia.

But Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft says Richmond is yet to offer its first round pick.

"It's very complex. Also, throw Jaeger in the mix. Both clubs, Hawthorn and Richmond, have approached our players. The way we see it, we'll leave the ball in their court to come back with what they think is going to be a fair trade to get a deal done," Ashcroft said.

"We're nowhere near the end point in both of those regards. We've had discussions and we'll continue to have discussions."

Hawks Luke Breust, Billy Hartung and James Sicily have all been mentioned as possible players to head the other way as part of the O'Meara deal.

While Breust isn't necessarily viewed as "untradeable", the Hawks would much prefer to keep him, given how hard it is to find small forwards who consistently kick goals.

Hartung, meantime, is seen as the obvious replacement for wingman Bradley Hill, who will eventually find his way to Fremantle.

The 22-year-old O'Meara hasn't played an AFL game since 2014 after struggling with persistent knee injuries.

He played three games in the NEAFL late in the season, but after pulling up sore he decided to take the conservative approach.

While the club would prefer to keep both O'Meara and Prestia, it's the former who has left the Suns quietly seething.

Chairman Tony Cochrane made his feelings clear in a statement when O'Meara informed the club he wished to join the Hawks.

"We are very disappointed because he has been with us for four years but has only played football for the club for two of those years," Cochrane said.

"We have put in a lot of time, effort, money, resources, made sure he had the best medical advice and took him to London to make sure he had the best surgeon on that first knee ­operation.

"We, unfortunately – and perhaps foolishly – believed that it would be repaid by him re-signing with us for at least another two years and we made a very substantial offer on that basis which he has ­chosen to reject."

Given that lingering tension, there is a chance O'Meara could enter the pre-season draft if Hawthorn doesn't satisfy the Suns with a suitable trade. However that seems unlikely.

It has happened before - the last notable case being that of Nick Stevens, who wanted to join Collingwood from Port Adelaide but eventually ended up at Carlton after negotiations broke down.

"There's always that chance. Our chairman's stated that publicly. We're all waiting to see what they (Hawthorn) come up with," Ashcroft told Trade Radio on Thursday.

The Suns are likely to be one of the most active clubs in the upcoming trade period, which officially begins on Monday.

They're likely to part with pick 27 in exchange for Magpie Jarrod Witts, while a number of other players remain on their radar.

The club is confident of signing Pearce Hanley from crosstown rivals Brisbane, while Bulldog Lin Jong and Port Adelaide half-back Hamish Hartlett are also a chance to head to the Gold Coast.
