In a gala function at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Shuey followed Andrew Gaff, Eric Mackenzie and Matt Priddis into the record book as recent winners of the award named in honour of the Eagles' premiership captain and coach.
Curiously, Shuey had received only 10 votes in last week's Brownlow Medal, trailing Gaff (21) and Josh Kennedy and Matt Priddis (17) among Eagles votegetters.
But he fared better in voting from the West Coast match committee, emerging winner ahead of Coleman medallist Kennedy, the consistent Gaff, star midfielder Priddis and captain Shannon Hurn.
Shuey said he was humbled to have won the award.
"It's named for a club legend who I was lucky enough to have played under," Shuey reflected.
"Not only that but the calibre of the four guys up here with me [Kennedy, Gaff, Priddis and Hurn]. I really look up to them.
"You don't play footy for individual awards but at the end of my career, when I put my feet up with my family and friends and have a beer, this is something I'll be very proud of."
Shuey averaged a career-best 25.9 disposals pers game in 2016 and set a new personal benchmark with 38 touches in West Coast's epic round 21 win over the GWS Giants in Sydney.
Spearhead Kennedy had his third top-three finish in the space of four years, while Priddis, incredibly, finished top-five in the count for the seventh time in eight years.
Shuey was also named the Chris Mainwaring Clubman of the Year.
Mobile key defender Tom Barrass, a Rising Star nominee in the round 23 win over Adelaide, was awarded Rookie of the Year and Gaff was player of the finals, albeit only for the one game, with the Eagles bowing out of September action at the first hurdle against eventual premiers the Western Bulldogs.
The Fremantle Dockers' Doig Medal will be handed out on Saturday night.
