Vickery has become the first free agent of this year's open trading season to nominate to move to another club.

A restricted free agent, the former top 10 draft pick has told Richmond he has a two-year contract offer worth close to $500,000 a year from Hawthorn.

Richmond have three days to match Hawthorn's offer – in which case Hawthorn would need to trade for Vickery to get him – or decline to match the offer and Vickery becomes a Hawk.

The Tigers are understood to be unlikely to match the offer. Richmond would be expected to receive a draft pick – probably in the second round – as compensation for Vickery going.

Clubs can ask for an indication of the likely draft compensation before making a decision on whether to match contract terms.

Richmond are seeking to trade in a replacement for Vickery from Sydney in ruckman and forward Toby Nankervis – a second-round pick in 2012 – who has been pushed down the pecking order at the Swans.

Geelong are also interested in Richmond star Brett Deledio, who is open to a move away from Punt Road if the right deal presented but is also prepared to remain at Richmond next year. Deledio has one more year of his contract remaining and is a free agent at the end of next year.

Richmond will seek a trade with Gold Coast for Dion Prestia with their first pick – selection six – involved but the Tigers are likely to want another pick back as well as Prestia in that deal.

Another former top 10 draft pick, Reece Conca, will remain at Punt Road, while there has so far been no interest in a trade for Ben Lennon.

Hawthorn have moved swiftly on Vickery to commence what shapes as a busy trade period for them, with plans to also trade for Gold Coast's Jaeger O'Meara and probably the Swans' Tom Mitchell.

Vickery has played 119 games for the Tigers in eight years since he was drafted with pick eight in the 2008 national draft.

Hawthorn hope he can fill a role similar to that of retired David Hale as a forward and relief ruck. The ACL injury to ruckman Jon Ceglar has made the need for ruck support more important for the Hawks.

A good mark, Vickery has played his best football as a forward, where he looks more comfortable presenting as a marking target than he does covering the ground as a ruck, but his versatility to play both roles appeals to the Hawks.

Hawthorn have a proven ability to succeed with experienced players for targeted positions to complement the youngsters they bring on through the draft.

Other free agents Daniel Wells and Chris Mayne are yet to publicly declare their hands on whether they plan to accept free agency offers to move. Wells has waited until after Friday night's club best and fairest dinner before making his decision. He is favoured to nominate a move to Collingwood, although Geelong have also eagerly sought him.

Adelaide are still working hard on enticing Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs with a push that, were it to come about, would effectively mean the Blues would be trading him for Caleb Marchbank from the Giants.

While Gibbs is not pushing for a move away from Carlton, and the Blues are keen to keep their star former No.1 draft pick, the possibility of a move remains.

Adelaide would most likely have to trade their first-round draft pick (13) for the deal. Were that to occur, Carlton could pass on pick 13 in what could effectively be a direct swap for Marchbank.

Presently the Marchbank trade would need to involve Carlton giving up pick five and getting Marchbank, the Giants' draft pick 15 and a player in return.

The Blues have asked about young midfielder Matthew Kennedy being tied to a deal but the Giants have rejected this approach.

Meanwhile, after months of publicly agonising over a shift elsewhere out-of-contract Bulldogs midfielder Lin Jong has decided to remain with the premiers.

Jong, who suffered a shoulder injury in the finals that cost him his place in the side, has re-committed to staying at Whitten Oval.

Teammate Koby Stevens is yet to make up his mind up on whether to remain at the club as he considers an offer from Essendon, while Nathan Hrovat is likely to be traded to Carlton for a late draft pick, possibly a future pick.
