Greater Western Sydney will have access to the second best player in the draft after moving further up the draft order.

The Giants, who earlier this week traded for Fremantle's pick three, have moved that selection onto the Brisbane Lions for pick two.

The Lions have taken the Giants' pick three, as well as pick 16.

The Giants have also received picks 31, 51 and 60, which they will likely use to match bids for academy players such as Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman.

The draft points attached to those three later picks are similar to the value of pick 16.

Holding pick 2 means they will be able to beat an early bid for Setterfield, unless Essendon bids pick 1 for him, which seems unlikely.

The Bombers would have to make that bid knowing he is probably not the top player on GWS' draft order, and that they would get him.

Clubs can only go into a draft holding as many picks as they have open list spots.

However, clubs that began the trade period holding future draft picks traded their way last year will be able to use those picks as well, as a one-off.

Therefore, the Giants will be able to go to the draft with three more picks than list spots.

The Giants will now look to move Jack Steele to St Kilda, and Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett to Carlton.

St Kilda are looking for a second round pick - they do not currently hold one - to use on Steele.

Another of the Giants' recent top 10 picks - Paul Ahern - has attracted some interest from North Melbourne.

Meanwhile, triple Hawthorn premiership star Bradley Hill will play alongside older brother Stephen in 2017 after being traded from Hawthorn to Fremantle on Thursday morning.

The Hawks gain pick 23 in the draft for the 23-year-old Hill, who played an important role in their 2013, 2014 and 2015 flag-winning teams.

The speedy winger told Hawthorn late in the 2016 season that he wished to return to Western Australia.

Hawthorn have now effectively swapped pick 14 and Hill for pick 23 and Tom Mitchell.
