Bottom line: The Crows tried and failed to get contracted Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs home to South Australia. Adelaide said the Blues had demanded least two first-round draft picks or a combination of players for Gibbs, a price they were not willing to pay. But it is a poor outcome for both clubs. The Crows could have benefited from Gibbs' class through the centre, while Carlton is still paying a player who would rather be elsewhere. Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said the club's focus remained bringing talented youngsters to the club through the draft.

BRISBANE LIONS

Ins: Jack Frost (Collingwood)

Bottom line: After a dismal 2016, Brisbane needed to make big changes. They were right to shop around captain Tom Rockliff, but found no takers. Rockliff was accused of poor leadership during the season and then caught posting a derogatory comment about a woman on social media. Brisbane's youngsters need senior players to set a better example. Lions list manager Peter Schwab this month said Hanley was suffering "losers fatigue", so it was wise to trade him away. Brisbane finished the draft period with a healthy list of draft picks to begin rebuilding.

CARLTON

Outs: Zach Tuohy (Geelong)

Bottom line: The main game for the Blues was Gibbs. They refused to budge on the experienced midfielder, demanding two first-round picks and keeping him against his will when the Crows couldn't match their demands. Managing Gibbs from here could require delicate hands. Meanwhile the Blues continued to stockpile young talent, gaining three more players from the Giants. They now have nine on their list. Crucially, they kept pick five.

COLLINGWOOD

Bottom line: After missing three consecutive finals series for the first time in 15 years, the Collingwood top brass have clearly had enough and that sentiment is reflected in their aggressive approach to this year's trade period. The Magpies have made a clear declaration that they believe they will be back in the finals mix in 2017 with the acquiring of Wells, Mayne and Dunn who will all be north of 28 years old by the time the new season commences. Their defensive stocks have taken a hit with the loss of Brown, Frost and Williams but they could look to cover that by picking up Fremantle's Alex Silvagni as a delisted free agent in addition to Dunn. Hoskin-Elliott is a talent and, with a clear run, will only improve the team.

ESSENDON

Ins: James Stewart (GWS)

Bottom line: Essendon was largely inactive because they welcome back so many players who were suspended due to the club's 2012 supplements program. There was talk of off-loading the No.1 draft pick but the club opted to retain that prized possession. With three picks inside the top 30, the Bombers can be creative at the draft as they begin to move forward with a new list and a new future after securing the wooden spoon with a depleted list.

FREMANTLE

Ins: Cam McCarthy (GWS), Joel Hamling (Western Bulldogs), Bradley Hill (Hawthorn), Shane Kersten (Geelong)

Bottom line: The Dockers have refreshed their list but there are so many unknowns about Cam McCarthy, who joined them from GWS as a highly-discussed player. Bradley Hill joins his brother at the club from Hawthorn and should give them some zip. But it's hard not to include that losing a player of a the calibre of Chris Mayne will hurt them. With the retirement of Matthew Pavlich, the club's list will have quite a different look in 2017.

GEELONG

Ins: Zach Tuohy (Carlton), Aaron Black (North Melbourne)

Outs: Shane Kersten (Fremantle), Billie Smedts (Carlton), Josh Caddy (Richmond), Nathan Vardy (West Coast),

Bottom line: With Corey Enright retiring, the Cats have looked to cover that gaping hole in defence by bringing in the durable Tuohy from Carlton. The Irishman has played the last 90 games in a row and only three other players in the AFL have longer active streaks than him. The return of Jackson Thurlow from a serious knee injury will also help mitigate the loss of Enright. Went like-for-like by losing Kersten and bringing in Black, and, after giving away their first pick as part of last year's Lachie Henderson trade, managed to jump higher up the draft order by giving Caddy up for pick 24. Vardy and Smedts are talented, but have been dogged by injury for most of their careers – not much skin off the top four side's nose.

GOLD COAST

Ins: Pearce Hanley (Brisbane), Jarrod Witts (Collingwood), Jarryd Lyons (Adelaide)

Outs: Jaeger O'Meara (Hawthorn), Dion Prestia (Richmond)

Draft picks: 4, 6, 8, 10, 73, 98, 116, 134

Bottom line: Lost O'Meara and Prestia but would be very happy overall, having gained Witts, Lyons and Hanley, and more importantly strengthened their draft position to a point they now have four top-10 picks. The expansion club showed they wouldn't be pushed over lightly, with outspoken chairman Tony Cochrane making the Hawks sweat before they landed O'Meara. With an improved run of health they loom as an intriguing side in 2017.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

Ins: Brett Deledio (Richmond)

Outs: Cam McCarthy (Fremantle), Jack Steele (St Kilda), Paul Ahern (North Melbourne), Patrick McKenna (Melbourne), James Stewart (Essendon), Will Hoskin-Elliot (Collingwood), Caleb Marchbank (Carlton), Rhys Palmer (Carlton), Jarrod Pickett (Carlton)

Draft Order: 2, 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 77, 109, 127, 145

Bottom line: While nine players depart the Giants and only one comes in, it's one big in. Brett Deledio could be the difference next year, with Wayne Campbell already admitting he expects him to play at half forward. Marchbank is probably the biggest loss given his talent, but the Giants did well in the deal to send him at Pickett to Carlton. Will be expecting to go one better next year.

HAWTHORN

Ins: Ty Vickery (Richmond - free agent), Tom Mitchell (Sydney), Jaeger O'Meara (Gold Coast), pick 88

Outs: Brad Hill (Fremantle), Sam Mitchell (West Coast), Jordan Lewis (Melbourne)

Draft picks: 88, 90, 108, 126, 144

Bottom line: By far the most fascinating players of the trade period, the Hawks would have been fascinating enough had they been limited to the deals which ultimately gained the Mitchell and O'Meara, a pair of talented young midfielders who Hawthorn would hope would form the nucleus of their side for a decade. They sold the farm to land the pair as well, effectively dealing themselves out of this year's draft, and much of next year's as well. But those moves perhaps paled in comparison to the off-loading of veterans and four-time premiership players Mitchell and Lewis, who filled the top two places in their best and fairest.

MELBOURNE

Bottom line: The Dees can probably run a membership campaign just on the signature of Jordan Lewis, a four-time premiership player. In one sense he fell into their lap and the Dees pounced. They welcome in four new players and only gave up the unwanted Lynden Dunn. Their list is now in good shape and they are in the strange position of not having a draft selection until 47. It appears Melbourne have improved their list and with another year under the belt of their young players, they can seriously look at finals.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Outs: Aaron Black (Geelong), Daniel Wells (Collingwood)

Draft picks: 11, 32, 33, 87, 92

Bottom Line: North Melbourne fired veterans Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Michael Firrito and Nick Dal Santo at the end of the 2016, so they have some gaping gaps in their list to fill. Hrovat, 22 and Ahern, 20, will inject youth into the 'Roos' midfield. But both have suffered serious injuries in their short careers, so they come with risks. Ahern is likely to miss the entire 2017 season as he recovers from a knee reconstruction, so North have demonstrated they are thinking long-term. Defender Marley Williams has shown promise and North got him from Collingwood cheaply at pick 105.

PORT ADELAIDE

Ins: Nil

Outs: Nil

Draft picks: 14, 17, 30, 31, 85, 103

Bottom line: It's hard to assess their success after they didn't trade a player, either in or out! They were only involved in the exchange of draft selections, including playing a role in the multi-club transaction that saw Pearce Hanley move from the Brisbane Lions to Gold Coast. For a club that didn't play finals Port has shown plenty of belief in their list. Two picks inside the top 30 will give them good options in a reportedly good draft.

RICHMOND

Ins: Dion Prestia (Gold Coast), Toby Nankervis (Sydney), Josh Caddy (Geelong)

Outs: Ty Vickery (Hawthorn, free agent), Brett Deledio (GWS)

Draft picks: 27, 56, 82, 100, 118, 136

Bottom line: One of the big winners of the 2016 trade period. The Tigers have brought in two quality midfielders in Prestia and Caddy who will complement an engine room that already features Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Shaun Grigg, Brandon Ellis and Anthony Miles. Prestia has been injured for most of the last two seasons, but has showed how damaging he can be when fully fit. Caddy had an indifferent 2016, but is also capable of being a valuable contributor. Nankervis will bolster their thin ruck stocks and pick 27 was generous compensation for Vickery. Deledio is a star and his loss will be felt in 2017 but trading him for a first-round pick next year is good business.

ST KILDA

Ins: Jack Steele (GWS), Nathan Brown (Collingwood), Koby Stevens (St Kilda)

Outs: nil

Draft picks: 23, 36, 61, 86, 104

Bottom line: One of the winners from the Trade Period. Pick up two handy midfielders in Steele and Stevens, while Brown is competent defender who will slot in well to Alan Richardson's side. Remember they have Jake Carlisle essentially as a new recruit as well, who can play either end but expect him to play down back. Finals football absolutely on the agenda in 2017.

SYDNEY

Ins: Nil

Outs: Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn), Toby Nankervis (Richmond)

Draft picks: 9, 19, 46, 49, 93, 111

Bottom line: A relatively quiet period for the Swans. While they lose a very good midfielder in Mitchell, Tom Harley and his crew have done a great job getting two picks inside 20, given they made the Grand Final. Isaac Heeney is expected to spend much more time in the midfield next year which should help fill the void of Mitchell's loss. Rather baffling that young forward Xavier Richards turned down a two year contract and didn't find another home.

WEST COAST

Ins: Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn), Nathan Vardy (Geelong)

Outs: Nil

Draft picks: 12, 34, 54, 106, 124, 142

Bottom line: The Eagles must have thought all their Christmases had come at once when Mitchell landed in their lap for the measly price of a No.88 draft pick. Sure, the former Hawk is 34, but he is still an outstanding performer – as evidenced by the fifth club champion award he won at Hawthorn this year. He led Hawthorn for disposals, clearances and uncontested possessions in 2016 and was second for contested ball. The Eagles believe they are still in the premiership window so if Mitchell can maintain his elite standards, his addition to a midfield that already boasts Matt Priddis, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff and Chris Masten can only be a positive. Vardy is talented and, if he can stay fit after just 25 games in seven injury-plagued seasons, could provide the stopgap in the ruck West Coast are looking for with Nic Naitanui (knee) set to miss most of 2017.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Ins: Travis Cloke (Collingwood)

Outs: Joel Hamling (Fremantle), Nathan Hrovat (North Melbourne), Koby Stevens (St Kilda)

Draft picks: 18, 26, 50, 75, 80, 94, 112, 130, 148

Bottom line: Cloke might not be a walk-up start to the Bulldogs' best 22 – after all they are the reigning premiers – but he certainly bolsters an already-deep squad. With Stewart Crameri available again too, there'll be no shortage of competition for spots up forward which is a welcome scenario given Jack Redpath will miss most of 2017 due to a knee injury. The loss of Hamling will be countered by the return of the injured Marcus Adams and the losses of Hrovat and Stevens won't hurt too much given the pair played 16 games between them in 2016.
